How to Beat the Winter Blues

January 10, 2019

Walking in a Winter Wonderland…. winter is amazing, most of the time. It’s full of fluffy snowbanks to play in, excellent skiing conditions, plus who doesn’t love getting cozy by the fireplace and warming up with a hot cocoa? All of these things and more make winter a very special time of year. However, winter can also mean less exposure to sunlight due to shorter days. If you don’t like the cold, or it’s just too darn cold where you live, you’re probably not spending much time outside these days. Winter can get us down in the dumps, especially after the fun and joy that the holiday season brings is over.

This year, we want to help you beat the winter blues with some key tips that will help you survive, and maybe even enjoy these chilly months of the year.

1. Learn Good Nutrition

Sometimes a clear start is what you need to rev your engines after all the holiday indulgence. If you’re not sure where to begin, our nutrition tours can help you sort that all out. Book a nutrition tour with one of our Registered Dietitians. During the tour, our dietitian will take you around the store and show you how to tackle food labels and how to meet special dietary requirements. Our adult nutrition tours are offered free to More Rewards card members and the tour is always free for school groups.

2. Hearty Home-Style Cooking

Nothing beats the winter blues like a deliciously hearty soup. Here are some great options from Fresh Solutions:

3. Prevent the Flu

Nothing can get you down the most than catching the flu. If you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, it’s not too late. All you have to do is book an appointment with one of our pharmacists at a store near you. Protect you and your loved ones from that pesky sore throat, cough and fever this year.

4. Vitamins and Minerals

In order to stay on top of your game this winter, it’s important to make sure you are continuing to get all the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy. Getting your nutrients in whole food form is always best, but supplements can help make sure you are getting adequate amounts of what you need.

  • Vitamin D is a mood booster supplement found in foods like milk, eggs and mushrooms. Most of us are deficient in Vitamin D during the winter as we spend less time out in the sun during these cold weather months. Vitamin D helps us absorb and metabolize essential minerals and also regulates the immune system.
  • Vitamin C is found in foods like citrus fruits and bell peppers. It offers protection against immune system deficiencies and is especially helpful in preventing the cold and flu.
  • Oil of Oregano and Echinacea are other natural remedies that can help you fight off the cold and flu.

5. Get Cozy

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that can cure the winter blues, like curling up by the fireplace with a favourite book or magazine and a delicious cup of hot chocolate.

6. Get out of Town

A great option if you’re feeling the effects of vitamin D deficiency, is to escape to somewhere hot and sunny! More Rewards Travel has loads of great deals to sunny destinations all over the world.
